Phase 1

Phase 1 is an important stage in developing phonological awareness prior to learning the sounds of letters and reading tricky words.  Children will be taught phase 1 first but then continue to be taught phase 1 alongside their progression of phonics throughout their reception year, to enhance these skills.

more information can be found here:

Phase 1 Phonics - Listening and Attention Skills

Listening skills can be difficult to master for many children. Help children develop their listening skills using the environmental sounds in this video. You can download bingo mats to play alongside them!

Phase 1 - Initial Sounds

You can play Ispy anywhere! in the car, walking to school, in a restaurant or just at home. This game will help children discriminate the initial sounds in words and help them segment words in phase 2.
I have added a video that may help you become familiar with the game. In class we use a selection of objects, their reading books, photos and colouring pages to play i-spy with the children.
Have fun!
