Welcome To Year 6!
Year 6 is taught by Mrs Buckley and supported by Mrs Calcutt and Mrs Broadhead in the mornings and Mrs Wilding in the afternoons.
Year 6 is, of course, the children's final year in primary school! In Year 6 we work hard in preparation for high school, but also have fun making final primary school memories.
This half term our PE days are Tuesday and Thursday. Please make sure you have PE kit in school on these days.
Our homework target is to complete at least 3 'reads' a week, regular Times Table Rockstars practice and a weekly maths or reading activity. The children that complete their homework each week take part in exciting 'homework treats' at the end of each half term!
Spring Term in Year 6
This term, we are studying the Victorians in history and North America in geography. When learning about the Victorians, we will focus on the main events of this era (particularly the Industrial Revolution), Victorian society (and the lives of the rich and poor) and travel and exploration (with a particular focus on the achievements of Mary Kingsley). When learning about North America, we will focus on the biomes found on this continent and link this to our learning about freshwater biomes last term. We will also investigate the diversity of the people that live there and examine the populations of the huge cities found on this continent, in comparison with more sparsely populated areas.
In maths, we will focus on decimals, measurements and percentages, as well as ratio, geometry and graphs.
In English, our lessons have a non-fiction focus and we will investigate the climate change activists: David Attenborough and Greta Thunberg. We will then use The Giant’s Necklace by Michael Morpurgo and then the Titanic's 1912 disaster as a stimulus for our writing.
In science, we will learn about evolution and light and in RE we will examine ‘Why Hindus Want to Be Good’ and ‘What the Resurrection Means to Christians’.
Our Learning Year 6:
Reading:
The basis for all good learning is to secure fluent and expressive reading. Children should read for a minimum of 20 minutes a day, preferably aloud to another person, but if not, by themselves. Reading records are checked by staff on a daily basis to ensure children are completing this as it is essential for children to be able to read fluently in order to access the rest of the curriculum. The Reading SATs paper requires children to read at roughly 120 words per minute in order to access the highest levels of achievement.
Maths
The whole school uses the Maths No Problem approach to lessons. If you would like to know more about the Maths No Problem programme, follow this link: https://mathsnoproblem.com/en/parent-videos/
Spellings
We follow the Spelling programme on Spelling Shed. Each week children have lessons on how to spell the patterns needed to be successful spellers for their age group. Children use Spelling Journals in class to record their learning and support their independent spelling during writing lessons.
PE - Your child should have their PE kit in school every day as sessions are sometimes subject to change, although currently our PE days are Monday and Wednesday.
PE kit should consist of:
In the winter, children may bring tracksuit tops and or bottoms as well if it is cold.
