Welcome to Year 3!
This year our class teacher is Miss Bristoll. We are supported by Miss Jones throughout the week and Miss Ratcliffe during the mornings.
This half term our PE day is Monday Please make sure you have PE kit in school on Mondays. The children also have Forest School and Ukulele of a Thursday. Please make sure you have your Forest School kit and ukulele on Thursdays.
The homework target for each child is 18 'reads' before half term and 60 minutes of Times Table Rockstars. If they reach this target, they will have an exciting treat at the end of half term!
Please see the knowledge organisers below to see what we are learning this half term.
Our learning in Year 3
Spring Term
During the Spring Term, the children will be learning all about rivers, mountains and coasts in Geography. They will be exploring different mountain types and will be learning about tectonic plates. After the half term, in History, the children will be learning about the Iron Age which follows on from the Stone Age and will be able to see the changes in development throughout history. In Science, they will be exploring different rock types and will learn how fossils are formed. In Guided Reading, the children will be delving into the book, 'Iron Man' and will be writing a narrative based on a twisted fairytale of the Three Little Pigs. Additionally, they will be writing an explanation text based on the book, 'The Street Beneath my Feet'. In Maths, they will look at length, mass and volume and then will be moving onto money and time. The children will also be having their weekly Forest School sessions of a Thursday.
Spelling
In KS2 we follow the Spelling programme on Spelling Shed. Each week children have lessons on how to spell the patterns needed to be successful spellers for their age group. Children use spelling journals in class to record their learning and support their independent spelling during writing lessons. See below for a copy of the Year 3/4 spelling list from the National Curriculum.
Maths
The whole school uses the Maths No Problem approach to lessons. If you would like to know more about the Maths No Problem programme, follow this link: https://mathsnoproblem.com/en/parent-videos/
General Reminders:
PE - Please ensure your child has their PE kit in school every day, but particularly on our class PE days.
PE kit should consist of:
Reading - Please hear your child read every night for around 15-20 minutes. Fluency in reading helps children to build their understanding of the world, their comprehension, vocabulary and develops empathy for others. Reading can be from many sources, not just their reading scheme book. Try this list for ideas: Year 3 reading list for children aged 7-8 | School Reading List
For support with basic number facts and times tables, encourage children to try the Top Marks website and play some fun games that help consolidate learning! https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/7-11-years/times-tables
We also use Times Tables Rockstars to practise our times tables - it is very important that all the children are able to recall any of the multiplication facts up to 12x12 instantly.
