Year 5

Welcome To Year 5!

This year our class teacher is Miss Withams. We are supported by Mrs Withers all day and Miss Ratcliffe in the mornings.

Year 5 is an important year at primary school. We are preparing for Year 6 and start to get given responsibilities for areas of the school such as being library monitors or lunchtime monitors.

This half term our PE days are Monday and Thursday. Please make sure you have PE kit in school on these days.

The homework target for each child is 21 'reads' before half term and 70 minutes of Times Table Rockstars. If they reach this target, they will have an exciting treat at the end of half term!

Please see the knowledge organisers below to see what we are learning this half term.

Autumn Term

In the Autumn Term in maths, we will be learning about the value of digits within numbers up to 1 million. We will also build on our knowledge of the four operations, starting with addition and subtraction. In English we will be writing different genres using texts such as Rose Blanche and videos such as 'One Small Step' as a stimulus. Our science learning will focus on forces around us initially, before moving on to Earth and space. In history we will be learning about WW2, including a trip to Bewdley Museum, and in geography we will focus on rainforests.

Spelling

In KS2 we follow the Spelling programme on Spelling Shed. Each week children have lessons on how to spell the patterns needed to be successful spellers for their age group. Patterns include the various ways to spell the "shun" sound (tion, sion, ssion, cian) and the "chur" sound (ture). Children use spelling journals in class to record their learning and support their independent spelling during writing lessons. See below for a copy of the Year 5/6 spelling list from the National Curriculum.

Maths

The whole school uses the Maths No Problem approach to lessons. If you would like to know more about the Maths No Problem programme, follow this link: https://mathsnoproblem.com/en/parent-videos/

General Reminders:

PE - Please ensure your child has their PE kit in school every day, but particularly on our class PE days.

PE kit should consist of:

  • White t-shirt or polo shirt
  • Black or navy blue shorts or leggings
  • Pumps or trainers (personally I prefer children to have trainers as they provide proper support during athletics lessons)
  • Tape for earrings if they cannot be removed.

Reading - Please hear your child read every night for around 15-20 minutes. Fluency in reading helps children to build their understanding of the world, their comprehension, vocabulary and develops empathy for others. Reading can be from many sources, not just their reading scheme book. Try this list for ideas: Year 5 reading list for children aged 9-10 | School Reading List

For support with basic number facts and times tables, encourage children to try the Top Marks website and play some fun games that help consolidate learning! https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/7-11-years/times-tables

We also use Times Tables Rockstars to practise our times tables - it is very important that all the children are able to recall any of the multiplication facts up to 12x12 instantly. I hope we will have lots of Rock Heroes and Rock Legends in Year 5!
